Removing it safely requires lockout procedures, structural planning, heavy lifting and a sequence that prevents one system from trapping or damaging another.
The TechniaHQRobot post reports that FERMA used 140 crew members on 12-hour shifts, operating continuously for 46 days. It also cites a 1.2-million-square-foot scope. Those figures are presented as contractor-reported project data because a detailed public Tesla engineering report was not located.
The Model S line carried fourteen years of manufacturing history
Model S production began at Fremont in 2012 and established Tesla's first high-volume vehicle manufacturing system. Model X later shared the premium-vehicle production footprint. Over time the line accumulated process changes, replacement equipment and infrastructure tied to those vehicle architectures.
Removing a mature line can expose how much manufacturing knowledge is embedded in physical tooling. Fixtures encode geometry, conveyors encode process order and control cabinets encode interlocks developed through years of production incidents and improvements.

Optimus needs a different factory architecture
A humanoid robot does not move through the same assembly sequence as a car. The product contains many compact actuators, gear trains, sensors, wiring harnesses, compute modules, batteries and calibrated joints. Final assembly must manage alignment, backlash, torque sensing, cable routing and software configuration across a highly articulated body.
Testing also changes. A vehicle line checks dimensional fit, sealing, electrical systems and driving functions. A humanoid line must verify every joint, sensor, hand, balance function and safety response. It may need motion cells, fall protection, automated calibration and longer end-of-line functional tests.
The supply chain starts before the line
Factory floor space cannot compensate for missing actuators, bearings, encoders, motors, gear components or batteries. Tesla has described Optimus as requiring a new supply chain, which means production readiness depends on supplier qualification and repeatable component quality as much as final assembly equipment.
Cleared space is not the same as commissioned capacity
A new line must be installed, powered, programmed, validated and ramped. Initial units may be engineering builds assembled with substantial manual work. Production claims become stronger when a company reports actual output, first-pass yield, cycle time, rework, field failures and the hardware revision being built.
The teardown video therefore marks a concrete transition but not the completion of the Optimus factory. It shows that Tesla has physically removed legacy infrastructure from a major area. The next evidence should come from installed cells and verified production results.
Existing automotive expertise still matters
Tesla's advantage is not that a humanoid resembles a vehicle. It is experience with factory controls, automated material flow, supplier management, batteries, motors, electronics and rapid manufacturing changes. Those capabilities can transfer even when the product architecture changes.
The difficult transfer is quality. A car has a small number of large motion systems. A humanoid concentrates many actuated joints into a smaller body and must maintain balance while those joints interact. Small variation repeated across dozens of joints can turn into noise, heat, control error or maintenance cost.
What to watch at Fremont next
The most informative milestones will be visible line installation, named production equipment, stable hardware configuration and output measured over time. A single finished robot cannot distinguish an engineering build from a repeatable production process.
Commissioning data should include how many robots pass end-of-line tests without rework, how long calibration takes and which failures appear after extended operation. Those numbers will determine whether the cleared factory area becomes a durable humanoid manufacturing system.
